Dental Fillings

Dental Fillings

To most people over the age of 35, fillings mean an amalgam of metal packed into a hole in the tooth; this method was not only unattractive, but actually damaged tooth structure.

At our mercury-free dental office in Tulsa, OK, we use natural looking fillings that not only eliminate the obviousness of your dental work but provide added strength to weakened teeth.

Why Silver Fillings are Undesirable

Silver fillings are 50% mercury. The edges of silver fillings wear down over time, becoming weak. As the filling ages, the metal expands and contracts, leading to hairline cracks and fissures.

Bacteria can slip between these fine cracks, gaining entry to the tooth's core, and the result is often infection and further decay. The mercury starts to corrode and leak, and can cause unsightly stains on your surrounding teeth and gums.

Benefits of Tooth Colored Fillings

  • Composite fillings are bonded to the teeth creating a tight, superior fit to the natural tooth.
  • Tooth colored restorations can be used in instances where much of the tooth structure has been lost, strengthening the remaining tooth.
  • Teeth filled with natural looking resin look more natural, and eliminate the feeling of a "mouth full of metal".
  • Since the composite used in tooth-colored restorations contains fluoride, decay can be prevented.
  • The composite resin wears like natural teeth, lasting for years.
  • Tooth colored composite fillings don't have to be placed down at the gum-line — meaning they are healthier for your gums.

After Your Appointment

Whenever an anesthetic has been used, your lips and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. You should stay away from hot beverages and chewing until sensation is normal again. Once the numbness wears off, you can eat and drink normally right away.

Your tooth itself may be sensitive to heat or cold, and may be pressure sensitive and tender for several days. Medications such as Tylenol (acetaminophen), Motrin or Advil (ibuprofen) or aspirin can be taken (one tablet every 3-4 hours) as needed, providing there are no contraindications for such medications.

If pressure sensitivity persists beyond a few days, if the sensitivity to hot or cold increases, if your bite feels uneven, if you have persistent pain, or if you have any other questions or concerns, please call our office.
