Afraid of the Dentist? Here’s How Sedation Dentistry Can Change Your Experience

Does the thought of visiting the dentist make you anxious? If so, you’re not alone. Dental anxiety affects millions of people, leading many to postpone or avoid dental care altogether. Unfortunately, skipping dental visits can result in serious oral health issues, including cavities, gum disease and tooth loss.

At Skyview Family Dental, we understand these fears and offer sedation dentistry to help you feel comfortable, relaxed and confident in receiving the care you need. Whether you experience mild nervousness or severe dental anxiety, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation can transform your experience at the dentist.

What Is Dental Anxiety?

Dental anxiety is the feelings of fear, nervousness or unease that many individuals experience when they think about or prepare for dental visits. This anxiety can vary in intensity from mild discomfort to severe panic. It can be triggered by various factors, including:

  • Fear of pain
  • Past negative dental experiences
  • A strong gag reflex
  • Difficulty sitting still for long periods
  • Feeling a loss of control during treatment

If dental anxiety is preventing you from getting necessary care, sedation dentistry may be the solution.

How Sedation Dentistry Helps You Relax

Sedation dentistry is a safe and effective way to ease dental anxiety, making your visit a calm and stress-free experience. At Skyview Family Dental, we offer two types of sedation:

  • Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)
    • A mild sedative inhaled through a small mask over your nose
    • Helps you feel relaxed and at ease while remaining awake and responsive
    • Effects wear off quickly, allowing you to drive yourself home after your appointment
    • Ideal for patients with mild to moderate dental anxiety
  • Oral Sedation
    • A prescription pill taken before your appointment to induce deep relaxation
    • You’ll remain conscious but feel drowsy and calm throughout the procedure
    • Effects last longer than nitrous oxide, so you’ll need a ride home after your visit
    • Recommended for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety or those undergoing longer procedures

Is Sedation Dentistry Right for You?

You may be a good candidate for sedation dentistry if:

  • You experience mild to severe dental anxiety
  • You have a strong gag reflex or difficulty sitting still
  • You need multiple procedures in one visit
  • You’ve avoided the dentist for years due to fear

If any of these apply to you, sedation dentistry can make your next dental visit comfortable and stress-free.

What to Expect During a Sedation Dentistry Appointment

Many patients feel nervous about trying sedation for the first time. Here’s what you can expect during your visit:

  • Before your appointment, we’ll discuss your medical history and recommend the best sedation option for your needs.
  • On the day of your visit, you’ll receive nitrous oxide or oral sedation to help you relax.
  • During treatment, you’ll feel calm and comfortable, with little to no memory of the procedure.
  • Afterward, you’ll either recover quickly (if using nitrous oxide) or need some rest (if using oral sedation).
