Dental Implants

Dental implants provide a foundation to support permanent replacements for original teeth lost due to damage, disease, decay, or trauma. They are designed to look, feel and function like natural teeth. The patient with implants will regain many abilities they may have lost — including clear speech, chewing function, facial contouring, and the self-confidence to smile!

How Do Dental Implants Work?

The implants themselves are tiny titanium posts. These are carefully placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth (it's a sturdy, solid replacement for your original tooth's roots.)

The implant acts as an anchor for the next step, a post, which is installed to support the restoration. Once the post is secured and the gums have healed, a crown that is designed to look, feel, and function just like the original tooth can be placed on top of the post and the restoration is complete.

Benefits of Dental Implants

In contrast to other types of restorative dentistry that may last only a decade or so, a dental implant can last the rest of your life if properly maintained. In addition, dental implants can:

The Process

For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. The first procedure involves placement of the actual implants within your jaw bone. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants will be hidden beneath the surface of the gums, gradually bonding with the jaw bone.

Temporary dentures may be worn during this time, and a soft diet adopted. Once the implant has bonded to the jaw bone, the second phase begins. The surgeon will uncover the implants and attach a small healing collar. Meanwhile, the final restoration (whether an individual pontic, a bridge, or a denture) is fabricated according to impressions taken of your mouth.

The restoration is completed, and after healing is completed the patient can treat their brand new teeth just like their original teeth to keep their gums healthy and the jawbone in good condition. Although the entire procedure can take 6-8 months, most patients report no significant disruption of their lives during this time.
